Royal Ballet and Opera Virtual Workshop

In a creative workshop for Year 3 and 4 pupils with the Royal Ballet and Opera, children explored Alice in Wonderland through movement and music, focusing on the ideas of dynamics and motifs. Using the whimsical characters and shifting moods of the story, they experimented with contrasting dynamics—light and heavy, fast and slow, sharp and smooth—to bring scenes like Alice’s fall down the rabbit hole or the Mad Hatter’s tea party to life. They also learned how motifs, such as a repeated gesture or musical phrase, can represent characters or themes, and practiced developing their own motifs to retell parts of the narrative. The workshop encouraged imagination, physical expression, and teamwork, while giving pupils insight into how professional artists use choreographic and musical tools to transform a familiar tale into a vivid performance.
