Y1 Poetry

We have been exploring the poem Our Planet as part of our English and geography learning. The children have loved diving into the poem’s rich language and big scientific ideas, using it to build both their reading skills and their understanding of the world around them.

Through careful reading and discussion, we learned how the poem explains key geographical concepts such as the North and South Poles, the Equator, the Earth’s tilt, and the cycle of day and night. We used the poem to practise visualising, making inferences, and asking questions, helping them become confident, curious readers.

The poem also gave the children opportunities to explore new vocabulary, spot patterns in rhyme and rhythm, and make links to their wider learning in science and geography. The children particularly enjoyed talking about how the Earth moves, why different places have different climates, and how poetry can help us understand real‑world ideas. Our absolute highlight was putting actions to the poem and performing it to Class 6!

It has been wonderful to see the children revisit the poem, deepen their understanding, and share their ideas with enthusiasm. Their growing confidence as readers has shone through in every lesson.
