Royal Ballet and Opera online lesson - Y1

Year 1 had the most magical morning taking part in a special Royal Ballet and Royal Opera online lesson. The children were completely captivated as they were introduced to the world of opera, learning that opera is a way of telling stories through singing, acting and music.

We listened to real opera singers, noticing how their voices can be loud, soft, high or low. The children loved joining in with the warm‑ups and trying out some of the dramatic sounds themselves. We then had a go at acting out scenes, using our faces and bodies to show different emotions and characters. We did lots of singing, dancing and storytelling, and the children threw themselves into every moment with brilliant enthusiasm.

One of the highlights was going backstage for a virtual tour. We explored:

  • the props

  • the costumes

  • the prosthetics

  • the pyrotechnics

  • the orchestra pit

  • the set building and scenery

The children were amazed to see how many people work behind the scenes to bring a performance to life.

And the best part? Our class even got a shout‑out for amazing participation! The children were so proud, and it was wonderful to see their confidence and creativity shine.

This was a truly inspiring experience that brought the arts to life in our classroom. Year 1 are already asking when they can take part again!
