Shout OUT for Sharks! – Writing from the Deep
Year 5 has been diving deep into the world of sharks, inspired by Steve Backshall’s incredible Shout Out for Sharks project and the work of the Bite Back charity, founded by Graham Buckingham.
Through guided reading and research, the children have explored how writers use first-person recounts to share experiences and emotions. Then, they took on a new challenge — writing as if they were sharks themselves!
From the speedy Mako shark racing through the open ocean to the curious Lemon shark gliding through warm shallows, each pupil has crafted a powerful “life beneath the waves” story. Their writing combines facts with feeling — showing empathy, using vivid verbs, and drawing on key reading skills like inferring, predicting, summarising, and retrieving information.
Their imaginative and factual recounts remind us that sharks aren’t the villains of the sea — they’re vital, vulnerable, and deserve our respect and protection.
We’re so proud of how our young writers have used their literacy skills to make a difference and raise their voices for marine conservation.
