Festive Farming Fun!

This week, Year 1 and Year 2 joined a live online festive farming session with the NFU. We met four amazing farmers who taught us all about their work – and we learnt so many fascinating facts!

Farmer Jon – Christmas Tree Farmer

  • Farmer Jon showed us how Christmas trees grow from tiny seeds into the big, beautiful trees we decorate.

  • Some of his trees had been growing for 22 years!

  • We discovered that each gap between the branches shows a year’s worth of growth.

Farmer Coco – Sheep Farmer

  • Farmer Coco explained the important jobs she does to keep her sheep happy and healthy.

  • She checks the fencing, looks closely at the sheep, and makes sure they have food and water.

  • Sheep have woolly coats to keep them warm in winter, but in summer they are sheared to stay cool.

Farmer James – Sprout Farmer

  • Farmer James starts his sprouts in a greenhouse and plants them outside after about 14 weeks.

  • He plants around 13,000 sprouts per acre – that’s a lot of sprouts!

  • He has to protect them from caterpillars and slugs.

  • After almost a year, a big machine operated by two people harvests the sprouts. The leftover stalks are eaten by cows – nothing goes to waste!

Farmer Lucy – Camel & Reindeer Farmer

  • Farmer Lucy told us that camels with one hump have thin coats for hot places, while camels with two humps have thick coats for cold places.

  • Camel milk is full of vitamin C!

  • She also looks after 21 reindeer. We learnt that both male and female reindeer grow antlers, which fall off and regrow every year.

  • Baby reindeer can move quickly and grow very fast.

We loved our festive farming session and learnt so much about the amazing work farmers do. A big thank you to Farmer Jon, Farmer Coco, Farmer James, and Farmer Lucy for sharing their knowledge with us!
