NSPCC Number Day-Maths in the Wider World

2nd February 2024

Wow, what an interesting array of occupations we had represented today across the school, demonstrating how important maths is in the wider world. In Year 6 through our research and discussions, we noticed that 'measure' was the most common theme through our occupations. These included; CEO of a business, Interior Designer, Doctors, Scientists, Paleontologists, Chefs, Soldiers, Accountants, Farmers and plenty of maths teachers! We also discussed how coding relied on algorithms and was important to a Programme Designer role and this linked to the study of our famous Mathematician: Alan Turing, WW2 Code Breaker.
A variety of maths related vocabulary was also discussed: budgeting, tax returns, profit and loss, proportions, ratio, quantities, area, co-ordinates ( for identifying position and navigational purposes, and temperature.
We later went on to learn about Fibonacci and his series of numbers and how they can be seen in nature- this inspired some Fibonacci art work.
Our NSPCC Number Day has certainly demonstrated the importance of maths and its cross-curricular application. This has been seen across the whole school today . Every class has been working on maths challenges with transferable skills and finding out about inspirational mathematicians.
A BIG thank you to Ms. Neale for coordinating the day and to you all for supporting this wonderful charity with your generous donations ( £46 to date) and by your imaginative costumes for different occupations. The school is full of doctors, vets, teachers, artists, truck drivers , chefs, footballers , scientists and so much more!!
Maths absolutely ...Rocks!
