Safer Internet Day - Year 2

Safer Internet Day is celebrated globally in February each year to promote the safe and positive use of digital technology for children and young people, and to inspire a national conversation about using technology responsibly, respectfully, critically, and creatively. The theme for Safer Internet Day 2026 was artificial intelligence or AI. In Year 2, we began to explore how AI can be used safely and responsibly and ensure everyone feels empowered to adapt alongside changing technology, focusing on voice assistants.
Our first activity used a short story to introduce the concept of a voice assistant and to help  recognise them as technology, as opposed to a person. We then explored how voice assistants can be used and thought about how different uses of voice assistants might make them feel, teaching them that they should tell a trusted adult if a voice assistant makes them feel worried, annoyed, scared, sad or confused. We also considered the ways that voice assistants can help them and their family, as well as consider some uses of voice assistants that may not be appropriate. This led to discussion of examples where the children had thoughtfully considered the example actions and how some could be potentially safe or unsafe depending on the context.
