Exploring Fractions

This term, Year 5 have been diving into the concept of fractions, deepening conceptual understanding before moving on to new learning. To ensure deep understanding, pupils have been using concrete resources such as Numicon, multilink and fraction models. This activity allowed children to visualise and manipulate parts of a whole, making abstract ideas more accessible.
In addition, children were developing their oracy skills through talk partners and the use of precise mathematical language, including key terms such as:
denominator, numerator, fraction, equal part, whole.
Pupils also used a stem sentence to support their reasoning and supporting access and success for all:
“The whole is divided into ___________ equal parts and each part is ___________ of the whole.”
This session not only strengthened conceptual understanding but also boosted confidence, preparing learners for more complex fraction work in the coming weeks.
