Welcome to the Foundation Stage at St Stephens Community Academy.

Hello and may we be the first to welcome you to our school.  Foundation stage is where it all begins! Our team is made up of Mrs Lumby and Mrs Hobbs, who are our class teachers, with Mrs Davey, Mrs Mayer and Miss Rowe who are our class Learning Support Assistants.

Foundation stage is all about laying the foundations for lifelong learning.  We work to develop children’s skills in the Prime areas of learning. These are Personal, Social and Emotional development (PSED), Communication and Language (C&L) and Physical Development (PD).  By creating a firm and well-rooted base in these Prime areas of learning children develop into mature, well-rounded individuals who enjoy learning and are ready continue their journey throughout the school and beyond.

Our curriculum is child led.  We plan our learning by following the children’s interests.

We spend a lot of time outside in our wonderful school grounds riding bikes, climbing banks, mixing magical potions and building camp fires. This provides children with the opportunity to develop team working skills, communication, physical skills and most importantly the time to be a child in a safe and secure environment.  We take part in 'Wild Tribe' sessions every Monday afternoon. This is planned time in our on-site woods where we build dens, camp-fires for cooking and develop bush skills in a safe environment.

At St Stephens we teach children to read using a scheme called 'Read, Write Inc.' Every day we learn a new sound and then use that sound in our writing.  This scheme has proven itself to be a very effective teaching programme and historically children leave the Foundation stage confident readers.

We hope you and your child are very happy at St Stephens School. We love our school and hope you do too.  If you need any additional information about the Foundation Stage at St Stephens, please feel free to contact us.The Year F Team.
