Y1 and Year 6 peer reading morning

Our class was filled with smiles, stories and shared excitement during our Year 1 and Year 6 Peer Reading Morning. The Year 6 children carefully chose books from our school library and spent time reading them aloud to our Year 1 pupils. The atmosphere was calm, joyful and full of curiosity as older and younger readers came together.

Year 6 were wonderful role models. They read with expression, encouraged the younger children and helped them sound out tricky words. Many of them shared how special the experience felt:

“It was a lovely experience, it was nice sharing stories with younger children.”
“Everyone listened and was kind and sensible. It was a joy to read to them.”
“All of the children were polite and discussed things they liked about the books.”
“It was really fun.”
“The children were making predictions about what might happen next. I think they loved hearing lots of different stories.”
“Some of the children joined in and read some of the words with us.”
“I liked that the children were intrigued by different parts of the story.”
“We asked the children how they felt after we read to them and they said happy, which made us happy that we’d done a good job.
"There was an octopus in our story and the Year 1 child thought the story was going to be about a toilet spider...That really made my day!"
“I would love to do this again.”
“I thoroughly enjoyed sharing stories with the Year 1 children. They were really involved in our story.”
“They all listened beautifully but one student put a lot of joy into my day.”
“They used their sounds to help to read the story.”
“I was so impressed with their listening. I loved the whole experience.”
“They really took their time looking at the illustrations.”
“There were so many smiles and laughter.”

Year 1 were equally enthusiastic and inspired by their older reading buddies:

“The story was really fun. They used good expression.”
“In one story, everything was upside down! It was hilarious!”
“The Year 6 children read so clearly and spoke so kindly.”
“I liked joining in and reading some of the words with them.”
“I can’t wait to read like that one day!”
“They helped me when I struggled with some of the longer words so I could sound them out.”

The morning was a wonderful celebration of reading, confidence and community. We are incredibly proud of both classes for the kindness, enthusiasm and teamwork they showed. This is definitely an experience we hope to repeat.
