Y1 - Exploring Dadaji's Paintbrush

Year 1 have been diving into the beautiful story Dadaji’s Paintbrush, and it has sparked so much thoughtful discussion and creativity in our classroom. We began by exploring the setting and the special relationship in the story, and of course we couldn’t miss the chance to taste some sweet, juicy mangoes just like the ones described in the book. The children loved this sensory link to the story.

We have spent time talking about how the little boy feels at different moments and what helps him when he is feeling sad or lonely. The children showed wonderful empathy as they shared ideas about what makes them feel better too.

To build on this, the children created their very own “Top Tips for Feeling Better” guides. These included people they can talk to, things that help them feel calm, and small actions that can cheer them up when they’re having a tricky day. Their ideas were thoughtful, caring, and full of Year 1 wisdom.

It has been a lovely week of storytelling, emotions, and connection — all inspired by one very special book.
