AnDaras Trust Computing Event

8th February 2024

Year 3 had a fantastic day at Launceston Town Hall along with Year 3 classes from the rest of the trust.  It was a whole day of Computing workshops.
We began with Matt Hewlett from the digital charity "Coding for Climate action".  The children firstly took part in a demonstration of how Micro:bits could be used to monitor our environment, before being given the opportunity to think of their own ideas of how Micro:bits could be used to give us early warning of climate emergencies.
Our next workshop was with PCSO Sarah Ross who did an interactive presentation to the children about online safety and also some tips on generally staying safe.
Ryan Arthur from Southwest Coding provided two workshops.  The first was Lego computing which gave children the opportunity to either make Lego that could move or more popularly with our children make a stop motion animation using Lego and the iPads.
The final workshop of a very busy day, was online safety and coding.  In small groups children played an animated game which prompts them with real life examples of online safety questions.  They also got the opportunity to do some Kodu programming, which they absolutely loved.  With Kodu you can create your environment and program items to act is specific ways, a creative way to introduce children to environment programming.
A big thank you to the Trust for organising it, Mrs. Bassett from Windmill for coordinating the day and all the providers for their inspiring computing.
